Block Printing

With Block printing a block of material (could be wood or linoleum) is carved. The uncarved surface is shaped to the required form. Ink is applied on the uncarved area and the image transfers onto paper or any other surface, when the block is pressed on it. Each print will be an original ‘pulled' from the block.

Here is an original wood block print example >

Collage

(from the French word ‘coller', meaning to paste or to stick)

A picture created by gluing together different materials onto a flat surface. These materials could include paper, fabric, photographs, text or any flat material of interest.

< A good example of paper collage.

Encaustic

Hot wax painting. Usually beeswax is used, with color pigments added. This paste is fused, layer after layer onto wood, canvas or other materials. Brushes or metal tools can be used to shape the encaustic paint. Heat guns (like a blow dryer) can keep the paint soft long enough to create the desired effect. Other materials can be fused into the paint like a collage.

Giclee (gee-clay)

(from the French word ‘giclee', meaning spraying of ink)

A giclee is a high resolution, high tech reproduction from an original painting made on a special large format printer (like an Iris printer). The colored ink is sprayed onto fine art paper or canvas. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography. The colors are brighter and last longer. Collectors like them because of their high quality.   < This watercolor giclee example is from our artist Verna Faye Birch.

Gouache

Gouache is opaque watercolor. This example is from our watercolor artist Mike Hill.

Monotype

A Monotype print will create a unique artwork. The image is created with ink on a (plexi) glass plate then transferred onto paper when it is ‘pulled' with the use of a press. A second impression can be made before the ink is used up, but it will be lighter and it will look different. More drawing or coloring may be added to the image later.

This example is from artist Joan Murphy Cremer >

Pastels Pastels are sticks of color used for drawing. They offer bright, portable colors with no drying time. Our artist Poppy Dully created this colorful pastel drawing.
